I have recently been researching the background, Masonic and otherwise, of the 1st and 2nd Barons Gisborough, both members of Zetland Lodge No. 561, Guisborough, North Yorkshire, and those of the 1st and 3rd Viscounts Long, as the 1st Viscount and the 1st Baron were brothers. Their third brother was Robert Chaloner Critchley Long, JP, DL (4 Sep 1858–5 Oct 1938), Master of your Lodge in 1922 and is one of the many brethren appearing in the useful photograph on a website, and taken that year, including his two elder brothers, The Rt. Hon. Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 6th Earl of Radnor, CIE, CBE, VD (8 Jul 1868–26 Jun 1930), ProvGM, Wiltshire, 13 Oct 1900–27 [JGW, 1898–99], who was also GSupt, Wiltshire, 1 Jul 1901–27, and The Rt. Hon. Frederick Henry Paul Methuen, 2nd Baron Methuen (23 Feb 1818–26      Sep 1891), ProvGM,Wiltshire, 2 Mar 1853–26 Sep 1891 [DepGM, MMM, 1856–57]. [It was his eldest son, Paul Sanford Methuen, 3rd Baron Methuen, who became in 1911 a Field Marshal, so I fear that the caption is wrong in this regard and the 2nd Baron had no post-nominal honorifics, except JP, DL.]

    There was a fifth brother, who may or may not have been a member of the Craft -- Colonel William Hoare Bourchier Long (22 Mar 1868-17 July 1943). Married, 25 Nov 1911, Vera Cecily Marchant Oliver, died aged 75 in Canberra Hospital, ACT, Australia and was buried in Canberra.

    Do you, by any chance, have any information about his possible membership, please?

    With the help of Bro. Peter Aitkenhead, Assistant Librarian, The Library and Museum of Freemasonry, FMH, 60 Great Queen Street, London, and your website, I discovered three more Lodges of which Richard Godolphin Walmesley Long, later [14 Jan 1888] Chaloner (12 Oct 1856–23 Jan 1938), then [23 Jun 1917] created 1st Baron Gisborough, of Gisborough Hall, Guisborough, was a member. The total number appears to be 15 and he was also a member of 5 RA Chapters, as follows:

    Initiated into Freemasonry, 11 Apr 1876, passed 21 Dec 1876 and raised 27 Mar 1877, in Lodge of Concord No. 632, Trowbridge, Wiltshire; rejoined 9 Oct 1893, resigning May 1920.

    Joined 10 lodges:

        (1) c.1878, Lodge Charity No. 563, Umballa (or Ambala), Punjab, India;

        (2) 6 Oct 1879, Dalhousie Lodge of Mussoorie and Deyrah No. 639, Mussoorie, North West Provinces, India; only one payment (1879) recorded;

        (3) 18 Oct 1880, Wahab or Benevolent Lodge No. 988, Sealkote [or Sialkot], Karachi, Punjab [now Pakistan], resigning 1881;

        (4) 1 [or 15] Dec 1884, York Lodge No. 236, resigning 1887 [I have been in touch with that Lodge's webmaster and Secretary, the latter of whom has promised to check when he can gain access to the relevant Minutes, as there is a slight discrepancy in the date when Bro Chaloner was elected a joining member];

        (5) 14 Jan 1886, Zetland Lodge No. 561, Guisborough; Master, 15 Jan 1910, resigning 18 Apr 1925;

        (6) 6 Feb 1890, Lodge of Friendship and Sincerity No. 472, Shaftesbury, Dorset; Master, 1890 and 1891, resigning 31 Dec 1919;

        (7 9 Apr 1891, Lodge of Science No. 437, Wincanton, Somerset, resigning 14 Dec 1893;

        (8) 6 Dec 1893, aged 37, Longleat Lodge No. 1478, Warminster, Wiltshire, resigning 31 Mar 1901;

        (9) 25 Dec 1893 [sic, clearly an error, as the Register quite clearly states 25 December. The Lodge at that time was meeting on the Wednesday nearest each full moon, and as the nearest Full Moon fell on Saturday, 23 December the Lodge should presumably have met on 20 December as opposed to the following Wednesday (27th). It would appear that a mistake was made when the details were entered into the Register [Message from Bro. Peter Aitkenhead dated 13 January 2011], Lodge of Friendship and Unity No. 1271, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, Master, 1895, resigning 6 May 1901; and

        (10) 19 Dec 1894, White Horse Lodge No. 2227, Westbury, Wiltshire, resigning 11 Oct 1901.

        (2) May 1909, Liverpool Castle Lodge No. 3373, Liverpool [erased from the Roll, 12 June 1996], resigning 30 Sep 1921;

        (3) July 1911, Old Wykehamist Lodge No. 3548, London, resigning Nov 1931; and
